Alternate PL - Call to Action

The Why:

The traditional professional development model for educators has proven limited in its ability to generate fundamental changes in teaching practice. Often, teachers attend workshops and seminars where they receive a tremendous amount of information passively, without having the opportunity to practice, experiment, or adapt the new strategies to their particular contexts. In addition, this approach does not always foster a culture of continuous learning or a community of practice that allows the exchange of ideas and experiences.
After experiencing the above, the motivation with the alternative model arises in promoting a more dynamic and relevant form of professional development, especially in teaching mathematics in prekindergarten.
From here, the concept of Gamification as an interactive online tool for educators and students is to change the perception of tedious mathematics and make learning more attractive and accessible. They participate in their education with great participation, trying new methodologies in real time and receiving immediate feedback. In this sense, Gamification is presented as a useful solution because it makes abstract concepts tangible and enjoyable. This is a relevant model insofar as influencing student learning and creating community among educators is concerned. In integrating Gamification into our teaching, we invite educators to create, collaborate, and share. That can have a big effect on school culture: a culture of learning taken seriously, yet enjoyed.

The What:

My innovation proposal aims to exploit the interest in teaching and learning mathematics through Gamification. This involves compiling multimedia tools designed to integrate Gamification into mathematics learning in prekindergarten, based on a COVA (Choice, Ownership, Voice, Authenticity) approach, allowing teachers and students to have personalized, meaningful learning experiences and achieve their goals. One example will be to show a short call-to-action video that dynamically explains Gamification in teaching mathematics in prekindergarten and the Professional Learning (PL) model.

Professional Learning for educators and gamification

The How?

I created this project using software tool usage and user-centered design techniques. First, I prepared the information I wanted to present in my video presentation to speed up the video creation process. After reviewing the options for building the app to create the video presentation, I decided on Powtoon and Canva. Canva is a complete, easy-to-use video editing application that allows me to do dynamic presentations that hold the audience's attention. Besides that, it is free and a platform I have already used, finding it easier to work with than other popular ones. Then, I edited the audio with Audacity to make the narration clear and catchy for educators. When the audio was ready, I made the presentation in Canva using that platform's video and image features. Later on, all the images and icons used from Freepik, and Pexels, are under usage licenses with credit to the corresponding authors. There you have it, then! My presentation was ready with ingenuity and problem-solving, and it had graphics and background music to make it memorable.
